Scholarship programme

With the support of the Friends of ERA Association, ERA has been running a scholarship programme for over 20 years, enabling legal practitioners from EU Member States, candidate countries, and potential candidates to access high-quality training in European law. Funded entirely by private donations, these scholarships ensure that legal practitioners who might otherwise be unable to afford participation have the opportunity to attend ERA’s programmes and enhance their professional expertise.

Experiences from Our Scholars: Expanding Legal Expertise Across Borders

In 2024, ERA’s scholarship programme enabled 32 legal practitioners to attend training free of charge, supporting their professional development. Most beneficiaries were from the Western Balkan countries and Ukraine along with other applicants from the EU.

ERA’s scholarship programme continues to be a crucial instrument in removing financial obstacles and equipping professionals in the accession states with the expertise needed for this transformation. The ongoing war in Ukraine and the growing importance of Western Balkan states in the EU accession process highlight the urgent need for accessible legal training in European law, as legal practitioners in these regions play a critical role in aligning national legislation with EU standards.

ERA received a total of 72 scholarship applications in 2024. In sum, the Academy awarded a total of 32 scholarships to legal practitioners from Albania (1), Bosnia Herzegovina (3), Kosovo (1), Serbia (12), Turkey (1), Ukraine (6) and other countries (8).

In total, the grants awarded amounted to a total of €30,245.08.

Acknowledgements

The success of these initiatives would not have been possible without the generous contributions from Friends of ERA members as well as speakers at ERA conferences who donated their fees to the Scholarship Programme. The total amount of these donations was €6,467.46.

Iryna TSUNOVSKA

Deputy Manager of Affairs-Head of Legal Department, Lviv, Ukraine

Scholarship for the Summer Course on European Labour Law

Scholar report

Your current occupation and country of work?

I am Deputy Manager of Affairs-Head of Legal and Information, Analytical Support Department Lviv District Council of Lviv Region, Ukraine.

How do you use European law in your work?

First of all, I conduct an analysis of the case law of the European Court, as I use such decisions as a source of law when preparing for litigation and other legal matters. Ukraine, as a country aspiring to join the European Union, is obliged to adapt its legislation to European regulations and directives. From time to time, I am involved in the analysis, preparation, and implementation of such acts into national legislation, including in the field of labor relations. I participate in discussions and the development of international agreements, as well as in the analysis and adaptation of our legislation to European regulations and directives.

How did you benefit from the scholarship and the knowledge gained?

The rapid pace of change in today’s world requires constant updating of knowledge and skills, as well as a commitment to continuous development and improvement. I frequently attend various training sessions and participate in seminars, which allows me to remain an attractive professional for employers. Being open to new knowledge and experiences, I want to emphasize that participating in this Summer Course has enriched my professional career and made me more competent in the field of European labor law. I deeply value the opportunity to learn from recognized experts in this field and to exchange experiences with other course participants.

A significant advantage of this Summer Course for me was the study visit to the European Court in Luxembourg, which provided practical experience and enriched my knowledge. Moreover, gaining international experience with the support of a European educational institution and its faculty is a unique opportunity for me as a Ukrainian lawyer, enhancing my resume as a young professional. One of my goals in the near future is to intern at a leading European institution, and knowledge of European law will help me better navigate this field. This educational experience will greatly contribute to achieving this goal and prepare me for a future internship.

Receiving this scholarship was a great honor and an unforgettable experience for me. I am ready to apply the acquired knowledge to further develop myself and my professional career.

Đorđe DIMITRIJEVIĆ

Attorney at law in Dimitrijevic & Partners, a leading full-service law firm in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Scholarship: Summer Course on Strategic Litigation

Scholar report

Your current occupation and country of work?

I am an attorney at law and Head of Real estate in Dimitrijevic & Partners, a leading full-service law firm in Bosnia and Herzegovina („BH”). My areas of expertise include Real estate law, Litigation, Banking & Finance Law, Contract law and Insurance law. I have more than 10 years of experience advising local and international clients, including banks, private funds, large corporations etc. In my work, I quite often co-operate with lawyers from big law firms from EU countries and UK.

How you use European law in your work?

As BH is not an EU member state, we do not regularly use European law in our work. However, pursuant to the Stabilisation and Association Agreement executed between the European Communities and BH, BH shall endeavour to ensure that its existing laws and future legislation will be gradually made compatible with the EU acquis. Furthermore, BH applied for EU membership in February 2016 and was granted EU candidate status in December 2022.

Having abovementioned in mind, European law is something that BH lawyers should be aware of if we want to be fully prepared to provide good legal services to our clients once BH becomes an EU member state. Furthermore, law is dynamic and evolving. Thus, we, as BH attorneys, should quite often address to legislator that certain matters must be harmonized with the European law – this especially during the procedure of adoption of new laws and if such harmonization benefits the interests of our clients. In order to do so, we need to learn European law.

Finally, once certain BH laws are harmonized with the European law (which is already the case in some legal areas) we, BH attorneys, should be aware of interpretation of the respective European law by the competent EU courts and administrative authorities – this to properly interpret BH laws that are harmonized with European law.

How did you benefit from the scholarship and the knowledge gained?

I gained valuable insights in various matters regarding strategic litigation and met wonderful colleagues from all around Europe. Furthermore, I became aware of certain extraterritorial effects of European law, especially with respect to the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. This valuable knowledge that I acquired will help me in my daily work.

I am hoping to stay in touch with some of the colleagues I met on the course and to have the opportunity to co-operate with them in the future in relation to various legal aspects.
